New Thompson Chain Bibles

Zondervan revises and updates the classic TCR.

Last summer I reviewed one of the first editions of the Thompson Chain-Reference Bible published by Zondervan after they acquired the rights from its Kirkbride, and I shared that they would be working to overhaul and redesign the Thompson Chain-Reference Bible’s typesetting using their unique Comfort Print fonts for each translation. The first of those new editions has arrived in the NIV translation, and I’m excited to show it to you.

Watch the video below to get a closer look at the revisions and updates Zondervan made, and keep reading for more specs, photos and purchase links.

NIV Thompson-Chain Reference Bible – Overview

The Thompson Chain-Reference system was created in 1890 by Dr. Frank Charles Thompson. After developing it for nearly two decades, the first copies of the complete Thompson Chain-Reference Bible were published in 1908. In total, the system now contains over 100,000 references as well as hundreds of pages of supplemental study material (biographical sketches, an archeological supplement, book outlines, and more). It’s a fairly simple and easy-to-learn system that organizes the scripture into topics and helps readers locate topical connections throughout the Bible (watch my original video review for a quick demo).

In addition to the complete overhaul of the typesetting, Zondervan’s new editions feature some slight content updates. Their editors made sure that all of the actual chains were correct and complete (something that was inconsistent in the older Kirkbride editions), the information in the “Analyses of Books” was repurposed for new book introductions, the archeological supplement was removed (it was out of date), and many of the illustrations, images, and maps were updated.
